Villa Victoria Academy - Library Collection Development Policy
The libraries of Villa Victoria Academy, faithful to the vision of the Religious Teachers Filippini, and mindful of the mission as stated in the handbook, strive to build and maintain collections that support the curriculum of the Academy and promote an appreciation of literature, arts and sciences.
Material Selection Guidelines
The evaluation and selection process for library materials includes these criteria:
- supports and enriches the curriculum
- is accurate, current, and authoritative
- provides quality of content and artistic merit
- presents differing points of view while reflecting the teachings of the Catholic Church
- represents a diverse culture
- is age appropriate
- creates a balanced collection covering a broad range of subjects
Gifts will be evaluated by these criteria, and assimilation into the collection will be accepted accordingly.
The following tools are consulted to aid in the selection process:
- award lists such as Newbery, Caldecott, Coretta Scott King, ALA Notable Books
- professional recommendations (librarians and teachers)
- reviews from professional resources such as School Library Journal, Catholic Library Association, Library Media Connection, Booklist
Periodic weeding is necessary to maintain a current and attractive collection.
Guidelines for weeding include:
- no longer meets curriculum needs
- beyond reasonable repair
- inaccurate or inappropriate
- obsolete
- unused or unnecessary
Reconsideration of Materials Guidelines
The following procedure will be followed for challenged material:
- any person submitting a verbal or written challenge must complete a “Library Materials Reconsideration Form”
- upon receipt of completed form, a library review committee will meet to consider the objection and reevaluate the material in question
- the committee, composed of the president, principals, librarians, and teachers, will render the final decision on the material in question
- challenged materials will remain in circulation until the process is completed
