Library Skills - Grades PK-6*
Library skills classes are offered once a week to grades Pre-Kindergarten through Sixth. In these classes, students develop skills that enable them to become efficient and independent users of information. Students learn how libraries are organized; they learn the kinds of information resources available, and they learn how to access these resources. These skills aid in the library’s mission of forming life-long learners. Furthermore, students are exposed to a variety of literary genres, and are encouraged to read for personal pleasure as well as for information.
PreK: Library time is story time. Children are introduced to a variety of literature (contemporary, classic, fiction, and nonfiction).
An activity is assigned to the corresponding story, and there is ample time for children to peruse and enjoy books.
Kindergarten: First semester lessons: library manners, book care, library procedures, the check-out process.
Second semester lessons: story time with holiday themes, character series (e.g. Amelia Bedelia, Angelina Ballerina, Henry and
Mudge, etc.), favorite authors (e.g. Eric Carle, Kevin Henkes, Dr. Seuss, etc.), The Tales of Beatrix Potter.
1st Grade: First semester lessons: library procedures, authors and illustrators, learning about books through titles, ABC order, parts of a book.
Second semester lessons: fiction and nonfiction, holiday themes (MLK, Presidents, Valentine, St. Patrick, Easter), classic fairy
tales.
2nd Grade: First semester lessons: book selection strategies, parts of a book, ABC order, fiction and nonfiction.
Second semester lessons: arranging fiction books, introduction to Dewey subjects, dictionary skills, favorite books.
3rd Grade - First semester lessons: authors and illustrators, Caldecott Award winners, fiction and nonfiction, fiction call numbers.
Second semester lessons: nonfiction call numbers, introduction to the Dewey Decimal System, introduction to the computer catalog, limericks, fables and fairy tales.
4th Grade - First semester lessons: fiction and nonfiction, arranging fiction books, the computer catalog.
Second semester lessons: arranging nonfiction books, classifying Dewey subjects, biographies, myths, Newbery Award winners.
5th Grade - First semester lessons: the computer catalog, the Dewey Decimal System, literary genres, almanacs.
Second semester lessons: the atlas, encyclopedia, specialized reference books, newspapers, poetic devices, Tall Tales.
6th Grade - First semester lessons: school and public library catalogs, accessing databases, charts, tables, and timelines.
Second semester lessons: choosing research topics, evaluating websites, citing sources, media literacy.
